My name is Courtney and I just had a mission question for you. Last summer I went to Honduras for 6 weeks on a mission trip and absolutely loved it, I know that that was where God wanted me to be and He taught me so much. This summer I planned to go back, in fact I've even already paid the $100 deposit. My parents said I was old enough to decide whether or not I should go (I'm 19) but my mom is kind of hesitant, thinking that I should stay home and work during the summer to pay for college. (I need to pay back a $3500 loan so that I don't go further into debt over the coming semesters.) I really want to go back to Honduras, but I know that God can also use me here. I'm just trying to discern His will. I was wondering if you had any advice for me? If at all possible please respond soon, I have to finalize it before I have to pay for my plane ticket. | Jack: Courtney, I’m glad that you had a precious mission trip experience in Honduras last summer. I can see that you are torn between wanting to return and recognizing your responsibility of saving money for college. The decision is really, yours, as your parents have told you, and I won’t tell you what to do either. However, here are some questions you might want to ask yourself as you pray and seek the Lord’s wisdom in this choice. 1) Since you have already had a meaningful experience in Honduras, what are some of your basic motives for returning? (Think this through carefully.) 2) How would you compare the urgency of these motives at this time over against what you might consider to be the urgency of saving money for college? 3) What opportunities for ministry would you have if you stayed home and got a job to save money for college? 4) In what ways could staying home and working help to prepare you one day for the future work you plan to do?
