I am in my mid-twenties, have a teacher's credential, and am currently working as a teacher's aide in a public school. Recently a friend at church invited me to apply to be a teacher at the Christian school her daughter goes to, so I did. I think I have a pretty good chance of getting the job, but I feel divided. I want to be in a setting where I can be open about my faith, but I also know that if all Christian teachers pulled out of public schools, kids wouldn't have Christian role models. Eventually, I'd like to move on from teaching to be a missionary overseas. Do you have any thoughts or tips? Holly |
| Jack: Holly, I can understand your dilemma. The reason it is a dilemma is that both options have their value! - Christian schools have the opportunity to incorporate a Christian world view into the teaching of all subjects. The administration can pick and choose as to who will be accepted, and students can be shielded from negative influences. However, Christian schools also have their limitations. They can create a “hothouse” environment, where students and professors don’t have to face the allurements of the “world.” Kids can also grow up acquiescing intellectually to the Gospel but never having to take a stand. - Public schools are often tough places to be a Christian. Christian teachers have to be very circumspect on what they say about their “religious convictions.” Depending on the geographic area, often some students, coming from difficult homes, are a challenge to teach. Yet, a Christian teacher can have an influence on fellow professors, give a witness when appropriate to students asking personal questions, and be a sponsor of a student led Bible study or prayer group. Obviously, both situations afford opportunities to serve the Lord. I think it comes down to where you feel the Lord calling you, how He has equipped you, and where you feel the Lord is leading you. Some questions: - How effective do you feel you have been as a Christian where you are now? - How do you see yourself using your training, gifts, and personality in the Christian school? The Lord has promised to lead us. Ask Him, listen carefully, and I think He will show you the next step. Jack |
