| Kenneth Van Der Slyus: (04/09/09) Hi Jack, been a while. I read your response on 'do we measure up'. I'm so agreeing. I've seen deadness in several 'Christian groups' here [at my university]. The problem was & is the leaders, they wanted everything their way, not what the Bible states. The most honest I've found is the group (not the leaders)in IV & Asian Christian Folowship which now I've been with for 6 semesters. This says something.
Thks, Kenneth |
| Jack: Thanks, Kenneth, for your observations. Perhaps you are alluding to the following paragraph:
As In Kierkegaard's day, there is much "easy believism" among those who call themselves Christians. Jesus was quite blunt in saying, "Not all who say, 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of heaven." In John 15, he noted that the branches that don't bear fruit (thus giving evidence of true spiritual life) will be cast aside. Serious words from the Master.
I’m truly sorry that you have been disappointed with the quality of life that you have seen among the leaders of the campus groups at your university. Several observations: • I would hope that all leaders of Christian groups were a positive example to those for whom they are responsible, as Peter exhorts church leaders in 1 Peter 5:3. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In such a situation we are called to recognize that only Jesus is the perfect leader. • Many leaders are living under a lot of stress. It is hard to take leadership on a secular campus where the whole atmosphere is stacked against biblical Christianity. Many are discouraged. I’m sure that most seek to follow biblical principles. Remember that interpretations of biblical patterns are often different. Here's a helpful quote: Be kind today. Most of the people you will meet are carrying heavy burdens • If you do see a leader who is making serious mistakes, pray earnestly for him or her. • Here’s an interesting statement from Confucius: If you see a good man; follow him. If you see a bad man; search your own heart. Jesus encouraged us to be careful in our judgments, noting that we may have far greater faults than those we observe in others. So, Kenneth, I am glad that you have found a place where you are enjoying good fellowship. May the Lord prepare you for your own leadership. Learn from the models you observe, both the positive ones and those who need to improve. In His Fellowship, Jack |
