| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| Rosalind Hopton: (05/11/09)
Your article on African Americans serving in the "Great Commission" was well written, however I must add to this. While I haven't served as a missionary, I have recently traveled to Ethiopia twice - once with a local church, and secondly with one other person. I felt a calling to help and decided to return bringing light medical needs, clothing and friendship. My second trip was to Ghana which was a mission trip, this was with an all caucasian group, that really didn't reach out to anyone that was different than themselves. I felt very isolated - and we call ourselves Christians! Perhaps this could be the reason why most African Americans stay away from "missions." I think we all should evaluate our calling and not be hypocritcal, perhaps then can we make a difference, and really answer God's calling and be able to make a difference. Thanks.

| Jack: Thanks, Rosalind, for your sensitivity. Racial and cultural differences are a natural source of division among all peoples, including Christians, if we are not careful. I’m sure that your experiences on these mission trips have heightened your sensitivity, and I trust you will seek to be a “bridge person” wherever you go. Jesus certainly was, and we are called to follow Him. Thanks for writing. Jack |
