Questions about: Guidance

Alison: (05/14/09) Hi Jack,

I recently returned from a year-long mission experience overseas. It was a challenging and growthful year and confirmed a desire to live and work overseas.

I now have a chance to go back there but in a very different capacity with a different organization. I'm not sure that the new job is the right fit for me, but given the current economic situation, I'm concerned that nothing else will come along (or not for a while).

I'm excited about the challenges this job would pose and what I could learn, but I'm hesitant to make a long term commitment when I know there could be major difficulties.

I've been praying and talking to friends, but haven't really felt stong guidence from God in either direction. I'm sort of getting the feeling that whatever I do, it'll work out ok.

Do you have any advice for me?

Thanks,

Alison

Jack:

Decisions that imply a long term commitment are never easy, Alison, as you are experiencing.

I wish we could sit down and chat for an hour (or more) about the decision you have to make. The best I can do is ask you to consider some questions:

- What did you specifically like about your year-long experience and what during that year gives you the desire to return?

- What contributes to your hesitancy to accept the new job? Is it something you can grow into or quite frankly something you would rather not do? What “major difficulties” do you foresee? Have you shared all this with the individual(s) who are offering you this opportunity? What would you rather do?

- I’m glad that you have been praying. Has the Lord said nothing to you? Does He usually speak to you?

- What do your friends counsel you? Your parents? Your pastor?

Keep seeking the Lord, Alison. I gather the impression that you don’t feel real peace about accepting this position. I trust that when the time comes to commit yourself, you will have a clearer idea of what the Lord is calling you to.

Thanks for writing.

Jack
