| Jozeca: (06/02/09) Hello Jack,
After a recent short-term trip to Colombia, I'm planning on returning to work with missionaries there who do church planting and work with the indigenous. I greatly look forward to the future and want to make sure that my decisions now will be a good foundation for the future.
Although I have my AA degree, I think it is important for me to finish my Bachelor degree before I get involved full time. I'm looking towards Human Services and have found a very good online course. However, as with most higher education, it's very expensive.
I know there is some government financial aid available, but after being out of high school for 3 years scholarships are limited, and I'm really not interested in loans (thinking long-term). Do you know of any scholarships that are available to future missionaries? I've done a bit of research, but only seem to find scholarships for children of missionaries.
Please let me know if you have any insight or recommendations.
Thank you! |
| Jack: Having worked in Colombia for 40 years, I am personally delighted that the Lord has laid the peoples there on your heart. (I’d be interested in know what mission you spent time with and which Indigenous people.)
1) I agree that it is very important for you to finish your Bachelor degree in Human Services. I would also encourage you to take courses in Bible, Theology, Anthropology, and Missions, perhaps from Moody Bible Institute or Columbia International University (they both have courses on line.) 2) No, I don’t know of any scholarships for missionaries (I wish there were!), except for those planning to be physicians. 3) Several options occur to me: • Study part time and work part time. It may take you longer to get through, but the experience you will gain in the work place will be valuable, especially if you can get a job that has to do with “human services.” • If you plan to be a missionary, you need to be developing a core of people who believe in you, will share your burden, commit themselves to pray for you, and very possibly contribute to your support. As you meet for prayer, you can share your financial needs. Some may offer to help you; all can pray that the Lord would supply your needs. It would also be good for this small group to get involved in a project together. • Share you burden with your pastor and see if the church you attend would be interested in giving you some help. • Review your life style. I’ve noticed that because of the economic down turn, people are writing articles on how to live more cheaply and simply. As a missionary you would want to do this anyhow; now’s a good time to start! Ultimately, if God has called you, He has promised to meet your needs. As you commit your way to him, trusting in His faithfulness, you will be surprised at how He opens doors. You have an adventure ahead of you! Live it to the full. Jack |
