| Questions about: Getting involved in missions |
| patti: (09/15/09) Starting over in my life at age 43 and really hoping to be of service to God and those less fortunate in the Savannah, Ga. area. I am a writer and photographer new to the area needing to make money but wanting more than a job...hoping to use my skills to bring awareness to a worthy cause and get paid.I don't need to make a lot of money, but do need to survive. Where do I begin? I have googled to no avail really (except for finding you). Please give me some diretion as to where to begin. Patti |
| Jack: Patti, thanks for writing. However, I’m not sure I can help you. Most of those who write me are interested in cross-cultural mission situations which involve raising their own financial support. Since you need to live from your work, this puts you in a different category.
Basically, you need to find an entity that needs articles and pictures of the “less fortunate” enough to pay someone to write and take them! You may have to get a commercial job to pay the bills while you get to know Savannah. And by “getting to know,” I would suggest the following steps: • Visit a social service agency to find out who and where the “poor” are. Ask if you could shadow one of their workers for a day or two. As you do so, ask what they do for publicity. You might be able to write an article or two and take some photos – as a volunteer. • Visit the ministerial association and find out what the churches are doing in the city for the poor. • Ask about Christian social service agencies. Visit them, ask about their publicity needs. As you get to know what the needs are, you may be able to do some volunteer work. This will help you come to know the area better, get to be known and appreciated, and possibly find out where there might be a paying job. I write articles and take photos, but always either as a missionary or a volunteer. I’ve never had to charge or make a living out of it. Ask the Lord to lead you to good contacts. It may take a while. But in the process you’ll learn a lot about Savannah! Jack |
