Awkward Blessings
Every blessing can be turned into something negative or dangerous.
Affinity groups can become ingrown and exclusive.
Buildings can lead to an edifice complex.
Civil rights can exclude others.
Comfort can develop softness and protectionism and weakened character.
Economic strength can be addictive and oppressive.
Education can produce elitists.
Ethnic pride can breed racism.
Individualism can violate community.
Literacy can foster rationalism.
Mobility can cause rootlessness.
Power can inflate self-understanding and hinder humility.
Privilege can foster me-ism.
Religion can divide people and cause wars.
Safety can distort one's worldview and grow into complacency.
Tax benefits can engender blind nationalism.
"When the Lord has brought you into the land to give you a land with fine large cities that you did not build, houses filled with all sorts of goods that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant - and when you have eaten your fill, take care that you do not forget the Lord." (Deuteronomy 6:10-12)
Lord, thank you for extraordinary blessings that few in this world now have. Help me to avoid the misuse of my bountiful provisions, and to learn how to use them to honor you and benefit all!
