More Awkward Blessings

Sinners have the terrible ability to misuse every good thing.
We can spin every blessing into something twisted, negative or dangerous.

We shop regularly, while others beg daily.
We own cars, while others walk or rely on public transportation.
We build retirement plans, while others die poor early.
We have garage sales, while others carry all their possessions on their backs.
We struggle with weight loss diets, while others barely eat.
We plan vacations, while others hope in vain for jobs.
Our children get allowances, while other children labor to support their families.
We love our homes, while others wander homeless.
We work hard to extend our lives, while others die young.
We aggressively protect our rights, while others live as refugees.
We make long-range plans, while others hope for just one more day.
We express our opinions freely, while others are ignored or persecuted.
We assume the right to education, while others can't even read.

"Then he told them a parable: 'The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?" Then he said, "I will pull down my barns and build larger ones... And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.'" But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And these things you have prepared, whose will they be?" So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.'" (Jesus in Luke 12:16-21)

Lord, help me realize my blessings and show me how I can serve you and others with them! Guide me in daily choices between my way and yours. God, move me toward compassionate stewardship and service to others - to live as Jesus did! Teach me how to live in solidarity with all earth's citizens.

"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction."

2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV)
