Vengeance

is not an appropriate instrument in human hands,
is self-serving if used in retaliation
is poorly managed anger toward others,
can be destructive to both parties,
is ubiquitous and profitable in American television programming (sports, soap operas, drama, crime, wars etc.)
never reaps good benefits,
violates God's creation of every person's dignity,
is rooted in our sinful depravity.

If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.' No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals upon their heads. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
(Paul in Romans 12:18-21)

Lord, I do not deserve your generous forgiveness, and I have seldom shared it with others in my life. Thank you for not treating me the way I treat others.  Make me into a peacemaker who leaves vengeance in your hands.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
