Work - Then and Now

Once work was very good, not toilsome sweaty drudgery.
Once it was satisfying and fulfilling, not a draining burden to be avoided.
Once it was beneficial to all people, not just very profitable to a few elite.
Once it was invigorating, and we didn’t’ run out of steam and shout:

“T.G.I.F!”
Once, at the end of an excellent work week, we were the capstone outcome “in the image and likeness of God,” and pronounced “very good!

Someday, n the “new heavens and new earth,” all work will be restored again. Thanks be to God!
“And God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. [But] cursed is the ground because of you… in toil [of work] thorns and thistles by the sweat of your face.” (Genesis 1:27-31; 3:17-19)
“Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. And there will be no more night, and they will reign forever and ever. See I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay according to everyone’s work.” (Revelation 22:3-5, 12)
Thank you for telling the truth about work – your creative “good” work, our corruption in sin, and for redemption that includes work, which will be fully restored as “very good” again in heaven. Help me to pursue my work in light of these three realities.

"All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us."

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (NIV)
