Trek 2009 Home

The Manila Director is Sophia Nibungco.

Born in New Jersey and raised in Palos Verdes, California, Sophia Nibungco is thankful that her mother kept praying. It’s those prayers and her family’s sacrifices that enabled Sophia to fall in love with God. One of the most memorable moments in college for Sophia was running PCN (Pilipino Cultural Night). After graduating from UC Berkeley, Sophia followed her twin sister (Felicia) onto staff. A Bay Area transplant, Sophia is the team leader of a new chapter at Cal State East Bay (Hayward campus)and finds herself in awe of the commuter students she works with now. Her 4 years on InterVarsity staff have been some of the most unforgettable years of her life.

As a student, Sophia was transformed by the Global Urban Trek to Manila. She would not be following God so closely today if it weren’t for her first Trek. During her study abroad experience in college, Sophia's heart for justice, the marginalized, and missions was first stirred when she lived in the Philippines for 7 months. She co-led the Manila Global Trek in 2004 and is excited to return in 2008 to her first love: Manila. On the Manila Trek, Sophia finds her passions fused together: poverty, city planning, social justice, and the Philippines. Sophia is looking forward to jeepney rides, calamansi juice, and tapsilog (Filipino breakfast).

Currently, Sophia lives with 2 close friends in West Oakland. Her household is part of a community of people who have a passion for urban ministry (made up of alumni from InterVarsity, Mission Year, and YoungLife workers). Her favorite part of living in community: the dinners!

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth."

John 4:23,24 (NIV)
