Spontaneous Community
7/5/09
So we've been at Amextra for a little over a week now and things have been great.
Amextra has only been in the community for six months so it hasn't fully gained the community's trust yet, which makes it even harder for us gringos to be trusted. Amextra's goal is to empower the community and encourage them to have ownership in Amextra and to volunteer their time and talents to serve their own community.
Other Amextra sites typically have nine out of ten of their staff be local people. It has been really exciting for us to develop relationships with the locals. It was even more exciting for us to see cultural barriers being broken and community members begin to put their time and effort into making Amextra a better place.
This was really evident when we were doing some construction projects at the community center. While we were digging holes and mixing cement (to install light posts for a soccer field where local youth hang out), several people came up and helped us do the job. They were glad to serve and happy that they could improve a part of their community.
Enjoy this video interview with Gaudencio, our supervisor at Amextra in Tultitlan. In it, he talks about his work with Amextra and gives you a taste of the passion he brings to his job
