We’re once again at each of our ministry sites, after an amazing weekend of rest and processing as a team. It was so nice to be together again for the first time since orientation.
During our mid-project retreat weekend, we ventured down to Tepoztlan, south of Mexico City. It is a beautiful little city surrounded by mountains, and the history of the city was apparent as soon as we set foot on the stone sidewalks. For most of us, this was also the first time since our arrival seeing so much green!
During the weekend, we looked at the different kinds of poverty that each of us have seen and experienced at each of our sites. We were able to take a step out of situations to evaluate them and discuss what we have seen and felt. By taking this step back, we were able to see whether we need to change any of our approaches or any attitudes.
On Sunday morning, nine of us woke up early to hike to the top of a nearby mountain. Because our team was blessed with some experienced hikers/climbers, those of us who needed it had the support of our team on the five-hour trip; it was a definite bonding experience.
On the way up, we had a conversation with a man named Enrique from Mexico City. We heard a little about him and he told us what he knew of the history of the area. We heard a lot about the Spanish invasion, and how it affected the traditions and ways of life of the natives. This conversation was, for some us, another example of how important the history of the country is to its people.
At the top of the mountain, we looked down upon the city of Tepoztlan, as well as the ruins of an ancient palace. God’s beauty was so apparent in that place! We had an amazing view of such a wide expanse of city, mountains and trees. The hike was yet another reminder that God gave each of us of his presence in this place. God is truly present in Mexico.
Looking back and talking about the first half our trips, each person had great stories to share about relationships that they have made so far, and experiences that they have seen God work through. It was encouraging to hear stories of other teams. God is working at each of our sites, and he has a heart for the people here, which he is also giving each of us.
