Global Urban Trek 2008
Cash ComfortsJuly 1, 2008
After hugging my parents goodbye, I proudly walked into the airport with only a backpack for the summer, my orientation bags, and $30 in my pocket. As Trekers, we had agreed to live in an incarnational manner with the people we’d be among. This agreement meant that my financial security (aka Dad) had just driven off.
While I was at the airport kiosk, I was horrified to find out that my bags would cost an extra $25. This money would be $25 out of the $30 that each of us Trekers had to last all summer. At this realization, I quickly looked back to see if Dad was still there (of course he wasn’t). Then, I started to desperately pray a rather shallow prayer. Somehow, in the end, God provided because the computer messed up, so I had no extra cost.
From just my first 10 minutes of the Trek, I realized how hard not having finanical security would be. During orientation, we have been learning what it means to sacrifice luxuries that will separate us from our future communities. In Luke 9:3-5, Jesus sent out his disciples with no material possessions, money or food to preach the gospel.
All of us Trekers have a similar calling this summer. Rather than prancing into Mexico like superheros, we’ll be going in a more humble manner. To me this change in lifestyle seems scary but very exciting.
