Righteous Ruckus

July 27, 2008

Today as I write, it is 7:41 a.m. on our last day in Egypt.

We have a busy day ahead of us with packing and planning, but tonight we will have a party to which we have invited all of our friends (anybody and everybody). We'll pray and worship God together, share testimonies, and then just cause some ruckus right here in Mokattam.

We now feel comfortable causing ruckus, because we are among friends. We walk down the street and we smile at them and wave, shake hands or kiss them. We work and we serve our friends. When we play, we are enjoying the company of friends.

Mokattam has been good to us. We have been richly blessed to take this trip. The relationships we have here have opened our eyes to the hearts and souls of the poor.

Not a day goes by when someone somewhere doesn't tell us that he wants to leave Egypt and travel to America where there's "many jobs and much money." It's become commonplace and now I know how to answer it.

I tell them: "Yesua hina w-Yesua hinak" (Jesus is here, and Jesus is there).

You don't need lots of money. If you have Jesus, you have enough. Seek the living God for the answer because America will not give them rest for their souls, no matter how much "better" it might be.

God is alive and moving hearts and souls here. We are amazed by the faith of these people – faith that can move mountains (literally), casts out demons, and endure this life with sure hope. They find joy in their lives here, and they smile at us and kiss us after getting up from the garbage. They are beautiful people. Christ, have mercy.

We have been broken down to a level where we are now attached to the poor and have to identify with them. We have followed our Rabbi and invited the filthy guests to our banquet, and now we are witnesses against ourselves.

We cannot go back to our lives the same, and we will not, for we have encountered the face of Christ – He has dirt on His cheeks and needs dental work. Hallelujah for the redemption of our sin into shining light, for the injustice being crushed and danced upon by men in gallabiyyas with tablas. Hallelujah for the seed of the Holy Spirit that can grow even in the grimiest slime and mire. We have seen this, and it is glorious in our eyes.

We are filled with excitement at the thought of sharing it all with you. And we will very soon.

Grace and Peace.

- Tim

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been give to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Matthew 28:19,20 (NIV)
