Prayer and Fasting

Alex Gee

"Fasting gives us the strength to face the shame that impedes our giving our whole hearts to God."

With these words Alex Gee led us into a time of prayer during our afternoon corporate fast. "Fasting is not about changing God. It is not a mystical exercise to gain God's approval. Fasting is not about changing my world, but about letting God reallign my heart toward his purposes."

Before a packed gymnasium, Alex confessed how much he hates fasting, but that his study of scripture has forced him to read the Bible's instructions. Fasting is not a legalistic injuntion. We are instructed to fast because it is good for us. "Many times we medicate ourselves with God's gifts," he said.

Fasting forces us to be quiet. "Being quiet is a difficult discipline in our culture," he said, "but just because you're not listening does not mean God isn't talking."

After these words, Alex had us pray in small groups. As he wrapped up the session, he challenged the audience to continue in the coming months to cultivate the discipline of fasting.
