A Call to the Poor

Janet Cornwall

In response to this morning's focus on the poor, medical doctor Janet Cornwall came to speak about her work with Servants of Asia during the past five years in a creative access country.

Cornwall was influenced as a child by Isaiah's "call to justice" (Isaiah 61:1 NRSV). She pointed out that, with respect to medical ethics, Westerners often focus on abortion and euthanasia, but we need to move beyond that to a respect for all life.

She previously worked in South Africa in poor hospitals and explained that the money, knowledge, energy, and faith that she has been given is the true privilege which has enabled her to care for the poor in this way.

The marginalized are her focus: children, women, people with HIV-AIDS, and people with tuberculosis. However, "the poor" isn't just a mass of people to her. She is committed to these individuals as friends, and those relationships dictate that she use her gifts to heal their pain.

The audience was clearly moved by her willingness to be a true servant in a place where most people wouldn't consider living.
