Urbana 2000 Convention Urbana 2000 Convention Report:Christian International Students and Scholars Conference Following Urbana 2000, 870 delegates gathered for the Christian International Students and Scholars Conference, which was held from January 1-4, 2001. Nearly twice as many students and scholars attended the conference than in 1997, after Urbana 96. Eighty countries were represented. Speakers included Vishal Mangalwadi and Vinoth Ramachandra of South Asia; Lindsay Brown (General Secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students) and Ard Louis of Europe; Nate Mirz of the Middle East; Rose Mbaegbu of West Africa; Lisa Espineli Chinn (InterVarsity's new Director of International Student Ministry) and Tong Ngan Liew of East Asia; and Maria Toro and Rene Padilla of Latin America. Andre Ong of Singapore led a worship team comprised of international students. The theme of the conference was "Serving Christ Worldwide." Delegates discussed how they can serve Christ on their university campuses and in their home countries, as well as their role in God's worldwide mission. Almost every night, students gathered with others from their countries and regions for prayer and fellowship. The halls were filled with the sounds of worship in different languages. On the last day, all delegates gathered to pray for the nations. Maz Sigander, a Swedish student studying at Southwestern College in Phoenix, Arizona, shared that the conference gave him a better understanding of international students from other parts of the world. Derwin Halim, an Indonesian student at the University of Minnesota, was reassured of God's promise that God has a plan for his future, a plan to prosper him and not to harm him. << Return to Urbana 2000 Report - Table of Contents |
