A
Monthly Prayer Bulletin for
InterVarsity’s 20th Student Mission
Convention
August 2003
“After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude
that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,
standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing
white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried
out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on
the throne, and to the Lamb.’ All the angels were standing around
the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They
fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: ‘Amen!
Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!’” Rev. 7:9-12
As you take time to pray for Urbana this month, begin by reflecting
on this scene from John’s Revelation- this glimpse of the God’s
Kingdom in its fullness. Add your praise to that of the great multitude
and the angels. Worship the King of kings, the Lord of lords.
When all of the Urbana delegates are gathered in the Assembly Hall at
the U of I to worship, we will see a shadow of this scene. A taste of
it. A glimpse.
Our prayers this month will focus on God’s calling students to
Urbana and into mission.
- “He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the
workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out
workers into his harvest field.’” (Luke 10:2) Pray to the
Lord of the Harvest to call forth workers for his harvest field. Ask
God to draw students to Urbana and to engage them with vision for giving
their lives in Kingdom service. Pray for thousands of “sent ones” to
rise in this student generation to carry the Gospel to every corner
of the earth.
- For it is said, ‘Build up, build up, prepare the road!
Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.’ For this is
what the high and lofty One says- he who lives forever, whose name is
holy: ‘I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is
contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to
revive the heart of the contrite.’ (Is. 57:14-15) Pray specifically
for the removal of obstacles which would keep students from coming to
Urbana or from giving their lives in the service of God’s Kingdom.
Pray for finances- for the money needed to attend the Convention, but
also for financial wisdom and order in students’ lives. Pray for
other obstacles which come to mind.
- “For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth
to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (II
Chron. 16:9) Pray for those students- especially ethnic minority students-
who often feel “unseen” by traditional missions models or
agencies, but who are growing in their desire and sense of call to missions.
Ask God to give them deep encouragement and signs that He sees them,
welcomes them, and calls them by name into His harvest field.
