Urbana 06 Track - Mission Through the Lens of AIDS - Speakers and Bios
As a pastor he has fostered a relationship with a number of churches in communities affected by AIDS. One of those relationships helped give birth to Beacon of Hope, a Kenyan-run program for women infected with or affected by HIV in one of Nairobi’s slums (see www.beaconafrica.org and www.carolinahope.org for the nonprofit organization that supports Beacon of Hope in the US). The story of that relationship will be published in the November issue of Christianity Today. Jim has served as the Director of the Mission Through the Lens of AIDS track for Urbana. Other articles by Jim have appeared on the Urbana website: Jonathan Uy, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is an HIV specialist and clinical researcher and takes care of persons with HIV both at the University of Illinois Medical Center and at Lawndale Christian Health Center. Dr. Uy has also served as a short-term medical missionary caring for persons with HIV in Kenya and has given lectures to medical missionaries on HIV and HIV treatment in Kenya, Thailand, and the Unites States. Dr Uy is the Principal Investigator of AIDS Research Alliance Chicago and the Chief Scientific Officer of the AMFA Foundation (Affordable Medicines for All). He attended Urbana in 1987 and 1990 as a student and works in HIV today partly in response to a plenary talk at Urbana 87 by Tony Campolo. |
