God's World Whole Life Stewardship - Bible Studies

PREPARED FOR THE MARKETPLACE

Read Judges 6 and 7

Introduction:

After the Israelites had settled in Canaan, the promised land, they failed many times to obey God's commands. As a result, God allowed their enemies to oppress them. When the people cried out to the Lord, God raised up a judge to deliver them. Gideon was the fifth judge of the period of Judges, which dates from about 1250 B.C. to 1050 B.C.

Quiet Time:

1. List the ways God strengthens Gideon's conviction that he is being called to deliver his people.

2. Although Gideon begins as a reluctant leader, Hebrews 11:34 gives him a place among the heroes of faith. How does God gift Gideon? How does Gideon change and develop as a leader in these chapters? (If time permits, read Judges 8.)

3. How are God's purposes accomplished?

Worship and Reflection:

"The day of Midian" seems to have been synonymous among the Israelites with God's deliverance of His people. However, Gideon's first task was to destroy the pagan altar and build a proper altar for worshiping the Lord. Using Isaiah 9:1-7, where Midian is mentioned, spend time worshiping God as deliverer, judge and leader of his people. Being called involves listening. Spend time quietly before the Lord, noting points from the Scriptures of worship that apply as you consider the callings of your life.

"Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life." "

Mark 10:28-30 (NIV)
