SERVING IN THE MARKETPLACE

Read Esther 4

Introduction:

The Jews are scattered throughout the Persian Empire of King Xerxes. The book of Esther tells how they were saved from total annihilation through the intercession of Queen Esther.

King Xerxes has selected Esther, a Jewess to be his queen. Mordecai, Esther's cousin, has raised Esther in the absence of her parents. Haman, a high-ranking official in Xerxes court convinces the king to decree that the Jews be destroyed. Mordecai is distraught. He appeals to Esther to come plead her people's case before the king.

Quiet Time:

1. Mordecai appeals to Esther to go to the king to plead with him for her people. What is her initial response? How does Mordecai finally convince her that she needs to serve her people in this way?

2. What was Mordecai's view of Esther's position as Queen? Her role was not specifically "service-oriented," yet she did use her position to serve others.

3. If you are already in the marketplace, how can you be a better servant on the job, regardless of the "service-orientation" of your work place? Who are you called to serve at work? Be specific. If you are looking forward to being in the marketplace, how can you better prepare yourself to serve others in your career?

Worship and Reflection:

Thank God for His call to you to serve Him in your present or future occupation.

"Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life." "

Mark 10:28-30 (NIV)
