THE BASIS OF GOVERNMENT
Prov.8:15-16
Political parties often formulate a platform to let voters know what their fundamental beliefs and values are, and where their candidates stand on issues. But what is the underlying platform, or basis, for the institution of government itself? Scripture teaches that government ultimately derives from Gods wisdom (Prov. 8:1516).
For some, this truth may be hard to accept in light of widespread disillusionment with government today. The decisions of political leaders and government officials around the world sometimes look most unwise. Yet that does not change the fact that God established rule and authority, and that all leaders will ultimately answer to Him for their leadership (see Governmental Authority at Ps. 2:1, and Governmental Authority at Rom. 13:2). And as evil and foolish as governments sometimes are, the world would be in anarchy without them.
Proverbs challenges government leaders to fulfill their roles with godly wisdom. They can start by fearing the Lord (Prov. 1:7; 2:19). Then they can be wise about who they listen to and how they make decisions (see The Wisdom of Taking Counsel at Prov. 24:6). If the wisdom of God has placed leaders in power, then it makes sense for them to wield power according to the wisdom of God. The Book of Proverbs is a good place to start acquiring that wisdom.
