THE QUEST FOR GREATNESS
Luke22:24-30

Is it wrong to desire greatness—to be a great salesperson, a great athlete, a great scholar, or a great performer? Shouldn’t we all seek excellence in what we do? Does God not want us to experience great achievements?

Jesus’ words to the disciples in Luke 22:24–30 touch on this complex issue. As He did so often, the Lord challenged the motives of His followers rather than their desires. He realized that they wanted greatness for its own sake, in order to lord it over others. They sought position and power as means to personal gain, not service to others.

Jesus defined leadership for His disciples in a unique way. See “Servant-Leaders” at Matt. 20:25–28.
